Protective gear can protect you, but don't let your body become dependent on it

Every day, our bodies endure various pressures and strains, which, over time, can affect the shape and mobility of soft tissues. While protective gear can provide support and protection, when facing pain, it is even more important to understand the signals your body is sending and find the underlying cause of the issue.

If your wrist hurts, wear a wrist brace. If your knee hurts, wear a knee brace. If your back hurts, wear a back brace. Wearing them makes you feel more comfortable, but it doesn't mean the problem is actually solved. There is one thing that is easily overlooked: when soft tissue is subjected to external forces, it deforms. Imagine five slices of beef stacked together, tightly bound with a belt for a period of time; after removing it, there will definitely be pressure marks, and the meat might even be squeezed to both sides. Wrapping for a short time may only cause short-term deformation. However, the consequences of long-term deformation can have a much broader impact.

With long-term wrapping, there is an easily overlooked issue—the microenvironment between the skin and the brace changes. When wearable devices such as wrist braces, knee braces, and back braces are attached to the skin for a long time, heat and sweat do not dissipate easily, leading to a potential increase in local temperature and humidity. Combined with pressure and friction, this can increase the risk of skin irritation and damage, while also potentially indirectly affecting the sliding of superficial fascia.

In a recent randomized trial directly studying knee braces, out of 23 patients who actually received brace treatment, 16 reported skin irritation and 5 reported numbness; a 2025 systematic review also pointed out that skin irritation or breakdown is one of the most commonly reported associated issues in knee brace studies (Brouwer et al., 2024; Migliorini et al., 2025).

In addition, wrapping limbs for long periods creates a closed, warm, and moist environment, which may provide suitable conditions for the growth of certain microorganisms. A 2024 study on the interface between skin and medical devices pointed out that device wrapping affects local heat and moisture dissipation, creating a unique skin "microclimate"; a study in the same year also indicated that the closed, moist environment between a prosthetic liner and the skin may favor bacterial growth (Reuvekamp et al., 2024; Najmi et al., 2024). Therefore, it's not that protective gear cannot be used, but rather that in addition to its supportive effects, one must also pay attention to wearing time, ventilation, sweating, friction, and cleanliness.

In Fact, We Are Compressing Our Bodies Every Day

When sitting, the weight of the upper body presses on the buttocks and back of the thighs for long periods; leaning against a backrest, the soft tissue of the lower back is also continuously compressed. There are many more examples in daily life: glasses pressing on the bridge of the nose and above the ears, belts binding the waist, tight underwear and women's bras compressing the body, and wrist, knee, and back braces also generate external pressure locally. Doing this once or for one day might not seem like much. But what if you amplify these effects over 30, 40, or 50 years? Over time, your body will record how you use it.

Protective Gear is a Tool, Not the Answer

If your wrist hurts, wearing a wrist brace can protect it temporarily. If your knee hurts, a knee brace can provide support. If your back hurts, a back brace has its uses in certain situations. The question is not "whether you can wear it," but rather not treating it as if the cause of the pain has been resolved. If you wrap your wrist when it hurts, wrap your knee when it hurts, and bind your waist when your back hurts, what about when your whole body hurts... Are you going to live your life wrapped up like a mummy? Protective gear can help you get through certain stages, but it may not answer the most important question: Why do you hurt?

There are many causes of pain, which may involve injuries, diseases, nerves, joints, load, movement patterns, and soft tissue status, and cannot be simply attributed to a single cause. So when facing pain, don't just wrap it up. Do not develop a dependency, and certainly do not evade the problem with an ostrich mentality. Protective gear can provide protection and support, and professional medical care and treatment also play an important role. What is truly important when pain recurs is to seek assistance from a medical professional for evaluation, understand your body, identify the potential causes behind the pain, and then decide how to handle the next step.

"Protecting your body is not just about wrapping up the painful areas, but starting to understand why it hurts."
